Further along, the shoemaker learned that the king’s daughter was in the castle of a witch. The young man decided to r escue her. But the witch locked him up in a stinking dunge on with a sack of sand mixed with poppy seeds and told him th at if he wasn’t able to separate the two, she would cut off his head at dawn.
The young man thought about his death. But his friends the ants came and helped him pass the test. The witch was ast ounded. Then she took him to a room where there were thirteen maidens with their faces covered: the shoemaker had to dis cover which one was the princess.

The young man became discouraged but he saw a bee that landed on... the sweetest one, the true princess. When the shoemaker uncovered her face, the witch was changd into a crow. The young people fell in love and lived surrounded by ani mals and poppies.

One evening, the sun was just setting in with true splendor when a
flock of beautiful large birds appeared out of the bushes. The duckli ng had never seen anything so beautiful. They were dazzlingly white with long waving necks. They were swans and uttering a peculiar cry. They spread out their magnificent broad wings and flew away from t he cold regions toward warmer lands and open seas. They mounted so high, so very high, and the ugly little duckling b ecame strangely uneasy. He circled around and around in the water li ke a wheel, craning his neck out into the air after them. Then he utt ered the shriek so piercing and so strange that he was quite frighte ned by himself. Oh, he could not forget those beautiful birds, those happy birds and as soon as they were out of sight. He ducked right down to the bottom and when he came up again, he was quite beside himself. He did not know what the birds were or where’d they flew. But all the same, he was more drawn towards them than he had ever been by any creatures before. He did not envy them in the least. H
31
ow could it occur to him even to wish to be such a marvelous beauty? He wouldn’t be thankful if only the ducks would have tolerated him among them, the poor ugly creature.
Early in the morning, a peasant came along and saw him, he went out onto the ice and hammered a hole in it with his heavy wooden sh oe, and carried the duckling home to his wife. There, it soon revived. The children wanted to play with it. But the duckling thought they were going to ill use him and rushed in and he frightened to the milk -pan, and the milk spurted out all over the room. The woman shrieke d and threw up her hands. Then it flew to the butter-cask and down into the meal-tub and out again. Oh, just imagine what it looked like by this time. The woman screamed and tried to hit it with the tong s, and the children tumbled over one another in trying to catch it, an d they screamed with laughter.

By good luck, the door stood open and the duckling flew out amo ng the bushes and the new fallen snow. And it lay there, thoroughly exhausted, but it would be too sad to mention all the privation and m isery had to go through during that hard winter. When the sun began to shine warmly again, the duckling was in a marsh, lying among the rushes. The larks were singing, and the beautiful spring had come. Th en all at once, it raised its wings and they flapped with much greater strength than before and bore him off vigorously. Before he knew w here he was, he found himself in a large garden with the apple trees were in full blossom. And the air was scentedly with lilacs, the long branches of which overhung the indented shores of the lake. Oh, the spring freshness was so delicious. Just in front of him, he saw thre e beautiful white swans advancing towards him from a thicket. With rustling feathers, they swam lightly over the water. The duckling rec ognized the majestic birds, and he was overcome by a strange melanc holy.

“I will fly to them, the royal birds, and they will hack me to piec es because I who am so ugly venture to approach them. But it won’t matter. Better to be killed by them than be snacked up by the duck s, pecked by the hens, or spurned by the hen wife, or suffer so muc h misery in the winter.” So he flew into the water and swam towards the stately swans. They saw him and darted toward him with ruffle d feathers. “Kill me, oh, kill me.” said the poor creature. And bowing his head towards the water, he awaited his death. But what did he s ee? Reflected in the transparent water, he saw below him his own im age, but he was no longer a clumsy dark gray bird, ugly and ungainly. He was himself, a swan.
How a Colt Crossed the River
34
One day, a colt took a bag of wheat to the mill. As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to a small r iver. The colt could not decide whether he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing nearby. He asked, “Aun t Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river?” The cow told him that he could and that the river was not very de ep, just knee high.
The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down fron a tree and stopped him. The squirrel shouted, “C olt, stop! You’ll drown! One of my friends drowned just yesterday in the river.” Not knowing what to do, the colt went home to consult his mum.
He told his mum his experience on the way. His mother said, “My child, don’t always listen to others. You’d better go and try yourself. Then you’ll know what to do.”
Later, at the river, the squirrel stopped the colt again. “Little horse, it’s too dangerous!” “No, I want to try mysel f,” answered the colt. Then he crossed the river carefully.

The
Frog
in the
Shallow Well
35
Have you not heard of the frog that lived in a shallow well?
It said to a turtle that lived in the East Sea, "I am so happy! When I go out, I jump about on the railing beside t he mouth of the well. When I come home, I rest in the holes on the broken wall of the well. If I jump into the wate r, it comes up to my armpits and holds up my cheeks. If I walk in the mud, it covers up my feet. I look around at th e wriggly worms, crabs and tadpoles, and none of them can compare with me. Moreover, I am lord of this trough of wa ter and I stand up tall in this shallow well. My happiness is full. My dear sir, why don't you come often and look aroun d my place?"
Before the turtle from the East Sea could get its left foot in the well, its right knee got stuck. It hesitated and retreated. The turtle told the frog about the East Sea. "Even a distance of a thousand li cannot give you an idea of the sea's width; even a height of a thousand ren cannot give you an idea of its depth. In the time of King Yu of the Xia dynasty, there were floods nine years out of ten, but the waters in the sea did not increase. ln the time of King Tang of the Shang dynasty there were droughts seven years out of eight, but the waters in the sea did not decrease. The sea does not change along with the passage of time and its level does not rise or fall according to the amount o f rain that falls. The greatest happiness is to live in the East Sea."
